Event Type

This training day will be held at Cobb Lake from 7am to 4pm on March 9, 2019. Please read the material on the Training tab and the Training/Training Days page for an overview of our approach to the different levels and areas of training. Also, see the Resources tab with links to February and March of last year’s homework descriptions. These training days are conducted to help teach you how to train your own pointing dog. In order to develop your dog into a reliable and consistent hunting companion, it is advantageous to spend time training your dog at home daily as well as exposing your dog to birds in the field throughout the month.

Please register by filling in the form below. There is no cost for members to attend. If you are a Utility level trainer and would like to participate in the formal group exercises you will need to purchase birds.  For the field training exercises you must have 3 chukar and for the retrieving exercises you will need to pay $5.00 for use of ducks. Utility trainers must also bring a box of blank shells for use in steady-by-blind, duck retrieve, and field steadiness group exercises.

After the formal portion of the training day you are welcome to continue training on your own. Handlers can purchase additional birds for your own training as well as required birds.  Fill out the total number of chukar, ducks, and pheasants you want to order from Black Hollow Gamebirds on the form. Your birds will be available first thing in the morning in the north parking lot of Cobb Lake State Wildlife Area. Please arrive early to purchase and collect your birds. Remember to bring your own bird bag and cage for transport of birds. Once you take possession of your birds, they are your responsibility!

Please indicate in the ‘Training Focus/Comment’ section any issue that you may want extra help with and we will attempt to be prepared to help or answer questions.

February 3rd chapter meeting

Rocky Mountain NAVHDA Members,

The kick-off to training season is just around the corner. The first chapter meeting of the year will be on Saturday, February 3rd, at the Thomas McKee 4H Youth and Community Building in Loveland, CO, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. Due to certain rules about the use of the event center, participation will be limited to 50 people; sign-up will be through the chapter website with a small sign-up fee of $5. There will be a potluck lunch, and a sign-up for that as well on the website. The meeting is meant to be social-informative, and the Board is working on getting speakers to give presentations on various hunting and dog-related subjects. We will also take this opportunity to have some fun with a little fund-raising by having raffles, silent auction stuff, and fund-raising games. The chapter would appreciate any items you would care to donate as silent auction or raffle items.

Registration for the chapter tests will also be opened on February 3rd, by either submitting test registration forms and fees at the meeting, or having them POST-MARKED ON OR AFTER FEBRUARY 3rd, 2024 and mailed to Jake Heesacker.

Looking forward to seeing many of you at the February meeting, and at this season’s training days.
